Throwing Out the Old; Embracing the New

September 25, 2015

"Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." Ephesians 4:31-32

A few mornings ago, I was sitting down to my regular bowl of morning oatmeal (happens when you get old), and began to pour my almond milk into the bowl.

The "milk" came out all curdled and clumpy, which was definitely a disappointment and a point of disgust. I guess I had let it set too long in my refrigerator and had ignored the expiration date.

Sometimes we do that in our own lives. We ignore God's warnings about things that ought not be in our lives such as bitterness, anger, slander, or any evil intent towards another.

God sees this blatant sin as disappointing, but more importantly as a point of disgust..something that should be discarded. Sin should have no place in a Christ follower's life, instead we should seek to be people of kindness, compassion and forgiveness.

Does that mean that we always live perfect lives? No, and never will this side of heaven, but Christ looks at the heart and the general direction of our lives. If we have truly submitted to His Lordship, there will be a continuing and increasing amount of "fruit" clearly demonstrating the healthy condition of our heart.

Letting go of feelings such as bitterness and rage is not always easy, especially when someone has wronged you or caused hurt. But, as Jesus is our best and prime example, though He was beaten, mocked, spat upon and crucified on the cross, He still cried out in love on their behalf, "Father forgive them, for they know not what they do."

Today, if you are struggling with negative feelings towards someone in particular or a group of someones, ask God to help you forgive and show the kindness and compassion of Christ.

In return, you will find that the Lord will smooth a healing balm of His love and mercy over you and the tensions of this world will fade away.

Blessings to you, friend.

Kristi
