Learning to Praise in All Things
"Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior." Habakkuk 3:17-18
Do you trust God and worship Him only when He answers your prayers affirmatively?
What about the hard times?
How about when your marriage is falling apart?
When your child dies of cancer?
When your partner is killed in the line-of-duty?
When your mortgage is overdue with no extra money in sight to pay it?
When you've been diagnosed with a serious illness?
Will you still trust? Will you still worship God for who He is?
Habakkuk, one of the prophets from the old testament, had come to the conclusion that even when things were not good; when life had taken a sour turn, he would trust in God's providence rather than his circumstances.
I was reminded of this earlier in the week. Life was beginning to wear on me. Deadlines, mounds of responsibility both at home and at work, people needing my help, a health issue that just wouldn't clear up, and then on top of everything else, all the wickedness we read and hear about daily in the news. I was exhausted and spiritually spent.
God spoke to my thoughts and reminded me to keep my eyes on Him. I had inadvertently placed my focus on things of this world and had allowed myself to begin to feel the weight of it all.
God, however, reminded me that He is still in control. He is still on His throne. Nothing or no-one can remove that fact, and it is His desire for me to be joy-filled despite my circumstances.
I decided right then and there to refocus; to worship and rest in the infinite wisdom and love of the Father.
Peace quieted my soul.
How about you today? Are you bogged down with things of this world? If so, give it to God and refocus your sights.
Praise Him for the day that He has made and ask Him to show you the good that is still here.
